Finding the right primary care doctor can be a large undertaking. Whether you moved recently or are just looking to make a change in doctors, starting the process of finding a doctor you like can be a challenge.  Here are four tips to help you make the right decision when it comes to your overall health.

Seek a Primary Care Doctor in Your Network

Before scheduling an appointment, you’ll want to ensure your doctor is in your health insurance network. Out of network doctors will cost more money out of pocket because your health plan has not negotiated special or discounted rates with that doctor. Most health insurance websites allow you to check to see what doctors are in your network

Get a Recommendation and Read Reviews

When starting your search for a primary care doctor, ask around to friends and family for recommendations. Once you have a list, check out reviews of the doctor online. Reviews typically provide honest feedback about the experience and will give you an indication of what to expect before you see the doctor.

If you are moving, you could also ask your current doctor if they have any recommendations for the doctors in the area you are moving to.

Cold Call

Once you have narrowed down your options, give the doctor’s office a call. From your first interaction with the receptionist, you will be able to get a feel for the office. They may not be taking new patients, but how they respond to your questions will give you a sense of what to expect. If they are taking new patients but you don’t feel comfortable based on your phone conversation, don’t feel pressure to make an appointment. Thank them for their time and move on to the next doctor on your list.

Visit the Doctor

Once you feel comfortable, make an in-person appointment with the new primary care doctor you’ve chosen. When you arrive, take in the demeanor of the people in the office.  Are the receptionists friendly? How long do you have to wait to see the doctor after you get there?

Once you meet the doctor, trust your gut. Is this someone that you feel comfortable with? Do you feel they will advocate for your health? Before going forward with a new primary care physician, you’ll want to be able to answer these questions and feel comfortable with your choice.
